Press Release: BTIA Hosts 32nd Bi-Annual General Meeting

On July 6, 2017 the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) hosted its 32nd Bi- Annual General Meeting at the George Price Centre in the City of Belmopan.  This year’s meeting was attended by the Board of Directors, Destination Chapter Chairs, BTIA members, tourism  stakeholders and partners along with CEO of the Ministry of Tourism-Yashin Dujon, BTB Marketing Director- Karen Pike, BHA President- Ted Tejada  and Amanda Burgos-Acosta- Executive Director  of Belize Audubon Society. Main guest speaker was Mr. Hector Alafita Vasquez, Operations Director of Gestión, Política y Planeación Ambiental, S.C. (GPPA) from Cancun, Quintana Roo.


The meeting recapped the BTIA’s progress throughout the past six months including reports from all Destination Chapters. 1st Vice President Raineldo Guerrero presented the executive summary of the 2017-2020 BTIA Strategic Plan on behalf of President Osmany Salas. Mr. Guerrero specified that: “BTIA recognizes the need to revitalize and strengthen its role within the tourism sector in order to move forward, meeting the demands of our membership and enhancing the development of the industry.”


Keynote Speaker, Mr. Hector Alafita Vasquez, focused on the importance of sustainable tourism and proper implementation of polices and guidelines by Government Departments by showcasing positive and negative examples in Mexico and the direct benefits of best practices. He stated:  “Promoting sustainable tourism and its best practices is an integral obligation of each country however, not everyone will have the answers and best solutions on understating the environment. It is essential that assessments be undertaken to appreciate the integration and role of all pillars including social, economic, environmental and institutional sectors. It is a collaborative effort which must be endorsed by all partners within the tourism sector in order to build a sustainable environment which can yield greater benefits for the country. ”


BETEX partners and sponsors were also recognized and presented with certificates and plaques of appreciation. The following representatives: BTB, BHA, Belize Telemedia Ltd., Avant Garde Studio, Chabil Mar Villas, Naia Resort & Spa, The Lodge at Chaa Creek, Blue Marlin Resort, Rumors Resort, Go Maya Belize Adventure, Viva Belize, Programme for Belize, BTIA Dangriga Chapter and BTIA Toledo Chapter were present to receive their award.


A forum on the theme, “Embracing Sustainable Tourism: Global Market Trends, Opportunities and Benefits” was held in the afternoon featuring Mr. Mike Green- Green Globe Representative, Hector Alafita Vasquez, Operations Director of Gestión, Política y Planeación Ambiental, S.C. (GPPA), Shaleem Chan- Hamanasi Resort and Brian Young from The Lodge at Chaa Creek. Key items presented included an introduction looking at “Why Sustainable Tourism?” As well as focusing on:

*Environmental and social concerns, practices and initiatives that can be undertaken by tourism private sector businesses to protect the environment as part of their tourism business model.

*Successful stories of business models that focus on sustainability and; Its competitiveness and benefits.

Mr. Ishmael Quiroz of The Inter-American Development Bank Belize also presented on alternative financial opportunities for tourism private sector businesses who want to invest in the eco-tourism market for their business.
