Once a sleepy fishing outpost, spectacular Placencia is a tropical oasis. Sun-kissed beach stretches for miles in this 'barefoot perfect' destination...
Long and slender, the narrow meandering peninsula of Placencia winds its way down the southern coast of the country. The eastern shoreline boasts mile after mile of continuous white sand beach rimmed by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. On the western side, a finger-shaped lagoon separates the peninsula from mainland Belize.
Placencia is synonymous with beach, arguably the best in the country, and the "barefoot perfect" panacea for anyone craving water activity. Each year, more visitors discover immaculate beaches and the warmth of the people of Placencia Village and its environs. An eclectic group of visitors - from backpackers to actor Mel Gibson - have stayed in the village and become a part of it, returning year after year. Proactive civic and community organizations keep visitors updated with news of plenty to see and do. Without a doubt, despite development, this glorious little peninsula with unspoiled beauty has become the "in" place for those in the know.
What also makes this slender piece of paradise so popular? It's carefree and laid-back, with a host of endless water and land adventures and attractions.
Getting there is easy. By land, enjoy a scenic four-hour drive from Belize City, crossing hills, and passing by groves framed by the Maya Mountains. Take smooth-riding Western Highway to the scenic Hummingbird Highway to Southern Highway, past South Stann Creek. Turn east to Riversdale and follow the bumpy secondary road down the coast through the villages of Plantation, Maya Beach, and Seine Bight, and then to Placencia Village, all four distinct areas. Patience is a virtue while driving the last stretch. Flying, an alternate option, is not as interesting but much quicker. In the blink of the eye, you're there.
