Cayo June 21, 2013. The Cayo Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association held its Annual General Meeting on June 21, 2013 at the Rumors Resort Hotel in San Ignacio, Cayo.

The meeting gathered over twenty four participants (members and supporters) of the Cayo chapter, with the aim of electing a new board which would be responsible for the leadership and direction of the destination. Ms. Estela Requena, BTIA Executive Director presided over the meeting and emphasized on the importance of the active participation of all members, in order to build a stronger and more influential chapter. “The BTIA stands at the forefront of the industry and it is of great importance that the Chapter is organized and active in order to strengthen the destination and the country,” commented Ms. Requena.

Discussions followed on the current issues affecting the Cayo destination. Members voiced concerns about issues such as the lack of infrastructure and accessibility of roads to some of the main attractions in Cayo including the Caracol road, San Antonio Village road and the Mountain Pine Ridge Road. BTIA 2nd Vice-President, Mr. Peter Tonti also reported on the issue of the facilitation of the flow of tourists between the borders. He noted that BTIA is involved in discussions headed by a Bi-National Committee under CENPROMYPE (The Centre for the Promotion of Micro and Small Enterprises in Central America), a regional institution attached to the Central American Integration System (SICA) which aims to ratify the agreements between the two borders.
