BELIZE TOURISM INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION STRONGLY CONDEMNS DESTRUCTION OF BELIZE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – NOH MUL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

BELIZE CITY, BELIZE – MAY 14, 2013

BELIZE TOURISM INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION STRONGLY CONDEMNS DESTRUCTION OF BELIZE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – NOH MUL

As Belize’s premier private sector tourism organization, the Belize Tourism Industry Association strongly condemns the irresponsible and careless destruction of Noh Mul, a precious and valuable ancient Maya Archaeological site in the Orange Walk District.  These deliberate and destructive actions clearly demonstrate a complete disregard for the cultural heritage, laws and policies of the country of Belize.

Belize’s Archaeological sites are a foundation for sustainable development in our country.  These treasures are showcased to the world via our cultural tourism products and are an invaluable source of information for the academic and scientific communities.

The Belize Tourism Industry Association joins our local Orange Walk Destination Chapter and calls for an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the matter by our local and national authorities.  The BTIA calls for all those persons who are found to be involved and complicit in this egregious act, to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of all applicable laws that have been contravened.
