Belize Eco-Tourism Association (BETA)
Mission:
The purpose of the BETA is to promote environmentally responsible tourism, to be sensitive to the impact of tourism, to promote pollution prevention and environmental concerns, to continually observe the effects of all the above and to promote education for locals and visitors.
Earth Day 1993 saw the birth of the Belize Eco Tourism Association (BETA). It was formed by a small group of concerned citizens within the membership of Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA), who wanted to see a voice specifically for conservation issues on the National Board of BTIA. The vision is for BETA to be an organization for anyone concerned about protecting the beautiful jewel of Belize from the dangers of unharnessed development. BETA would like to see BTIA and government working together to achieve the ultimate goal: That Belize is and will continue to be an ecotourism destination, a showcase for the world of how to protect the environment while it benefits from the natural beauty and resources of this special country.
BETA recognizes the importance of community involvement and benefit as an important part of sustainable tourism. Therefore BETA is committed to helping Belizeans learn ways to benefit from tourism without adversely affecting their cultures and lifestyles. Encouragement of the arts, crafts, and traditional healing industries can help to achieve these objectives.
